After my horrific, soul-crushing Monday, I have to say: I kicked Tuesday’s butt! LJ and I spent the entire day at Coney Island where we just LOVE the kitsch, the rides, the snacks and the overall awesomeness. (Plus, running into Zach Galifianakis around every corner didn’t hurt.)
Pure awesomeness. My daughter keeps talking about the bumper cars…they don’t have bumper cars there, right? Not to mention she’s nowhere near tall/old enough. Where do they get these ideas?
I’m pretty sure I saw old-school, super dangerous/awesome bumper cars in the “older” section by the haunted house and arcade, etc. That whole area is my favorite: so many cool vintage things. LJ was terrified of about 75% of it.
Yep, there are bumper cars across from the freak show.
Seeing LJ on the boat ride makes me miss Nunley’s…
Don- At my parent’s house there are drawers filled with pics of me riding those boats at Nunley’s, and that was DEF the ride I worked the most during all those summers. I would KILL for Nunley’s now- she’s the perfect age for all of it (except the roller coaster). Sigh…
For some reason I remember you working the cars a lot, too, or maybe the Sky Fighters/Dune Buggies combo. My memory’s a little fuzzy on the details.
I loved the Tubs… which meant I’d always end up on the Coaster.
Yeah, I guess I worked everything EXCEPT the carousel, coaster and tea cups, which were “guys-only” because…..? Loved sitting in that damn golf shack.
I guess we’ve hit the nested comment limit again.
Golf was the best possible job you could have there. Radio, shade, plenty of windowsill space on which to scrawl Phish or Yes or Pink Floyd lyrics.
Trust me, you were better off never working the coaster. The hand brake would kill my arm after a few hours, it was greasy, parents didn’t understand the concept of “your kid has to get back on line because there are other people waiting”. Just about the only good thing about it was when they added padding to the seat backs because some woman was convinced the ride was going to give her precious son spinal damage.
Fun fact: I mentioned those padded seats when I gave the speech/toast at Tim D.’s wedding, because he was running the ride the day that woman complained. Nice how I can tie Nunley’s into pretty much everything I’ve ever done with my life. 🙂
Such FUN!
I love the images, the faces — heck, your pix even invoke sounds and smells, they’re so clear.
Thank you for sharing…
Mikalee
It is SO much fun. Thanks for visiting!
Wordless Wednesdays are always the best!!
Right? Sometimes pics tell the story better than any rambling words. 😉
Please enjoy it again, if this will be the case.

The arm wrestler machine brings back memories. Haven’t seen it for ever…
I had never seen an arm wrestling machine before! I was hysterically laughing… although my daughter was terrified of it for some reason.
I’m going to side with your daughter on this one. Creepy!
We got engaged on the beach nearby. When we visited New York (from the UK), I’d planned to go out there to see it. We got there – but it was closed – out of season. Before even visiting, I had in my head the image of some sort of amusement park that Scooby Doo and the gang would have an adventure at. Closed down, it felt a bit like that. But I hope I get to visist it agian – this time when it’s open.
I hope you do get to visit again! Honestly- I was there JUST as they were opening one morning, so a lot of it was eerily empty. That’s what made it awesome and VERY Scooby Doo.
looks like a fun time! 🙂
I’m not a mom, but I do live in Brooklyn and do love me some Coney Island. Your blog today helped me waste quite a bit of time at work, damn you for being too funny!
Congrats on being freshly pressed!
Hey, thanks! Sorry if I distracted you. It’s Friday, anyway… and work’s stupid. 😉
Thats a cool place for kids:)
Probably even cooler for adults!
never been, but hope to go! i think my son would love it!
You’ll probably like it even more. Seriously.
how sweet. I love a carnival!
Me, too! Especially the old-school games and junk food.
That looks like a great time! Never been to Coney Island before, but it’s definitely going on my “To Travel” list!
Yay! Do it!
Great pictures! I’ve never been to Coney Island but I grew up in Montreal where up until the 1980s there was an amusement park modelled after Coney Island called Belmont Park. Every summer Mom would cart all of us out for a day that resulted in driving her to drink for, probably, weeks to come. Such wonderful memories. Your blog has got me to add Coney Island to my bucket list! Thanks!
When you’re a mom, I feel like everything drives you to drink. Dora, having 9 tea parties a day, fighting over whether or not a 3 year old has to pee… everything requires drinking afterward. You know, I’ve never been to Montreal, and I’m DYING to go. You just reminded me! Thanks!
I have been living in New York City (Brooklyn, Bronx, and a few other areas…) But Coney Island is one of the best places to visit. This was a good post about Coney Island.
Thanks!
o0o the NEw and improved coney island..id go there if i was viisting ny but i live in ny so i never get a chance..isnt it strange haha
My husband was raised in Bensenhurst and sometimes talks about his Coney Island days. When we go back, we always stop and have Nathan’s. Why are they so delicious????? Thanks for the photos!
I grew up on LI and we used to hang out at a local Nathan’s ALL. THE. TIME. So many hot dogs. Probably why I’m a vegetarian now. 😉
Great photos!!!
Coney Island is also one of my favourites – the aquarium is amazing.
And of course I love, love, LOVE the boardwalk/funfare for its fabulousness – even though it does also creep me out a little – in a Scooby-Doo type way!.
Nicky.
Thanks! Yeah, the aquarium is great. Anyplace with cute walruses is awesome in my book.
Zach Galifianakis??? Really? I totally ❤ him:) I love Coney Island too. I haven't been in years, but I'm so glad places that down and dirty and silly still exist in our sanitized, bigger, better, newer obsessed world! Great pics!
Thanks! Yeah, he was filming something- probably Bored to Death (which i LOVE), although it could have been a movie. Good stuff.
Looks like so much fun! It must be an amazing place! To bad I like half way across the world.. although, maybe i will just have to travel the world, and see what I´m missing!
regards

Well, everyone needs to come to NYC at least once!
It looks like Coney Island has been cleaned up. I don’t live in New York any more, but the last time I saw Coney Island, it was in a sad state. I’m happy to see it’s been restored to its former glory. It makes me homesick to see these pictures. I grew up in Coney Island and I had so much fun. Thanks for the great memories.
Ahhh, there is still some seediness to Coney Island, for sure. They did clean up the boardwalk quite a bit, though. It’s pretty fantastic.
One of my favorite places on the planet! Great photos.
The area brings me to the true imagination of Five adventures. Cool.
Park Slope represent! I used to go to Coney Island all the time when I was a kid. Loved it to death. It was my version of Disney Land.
it looks like a fantasitic dream!!!
enjoyed your pictures. You must have had a great time .

Eye popping pictures of Coney Island.
Visited Coney Island a few years ago in January! Great pictures of a deserted boardwalk and fun fair but always hoped to get back and see it in Summer and a bit more lively. It looks great!

What false advertising, it’s not even really an island…but I still really wanna go there this summer.
Well, technically, it *kind* of is. I mean, it’s in Brooklyn, which is the westernmost part of Long Island, basically. So it’s ON an island, in a way. But yeah, I hear you.
Hah, yeh, good point. I think that it might have originally been its own island, but with erosion and all, things happen I guess.
I love the pictures…..looks like so much fun!
SHOOT THE FREAK!
One of my favorite places on earth. My father grew up there and have been going since I was a kid. Cyclone was my first roller coaster ever when I was 6 years old!
I have always wanted to go to Coney Island, these pictures are GREAT!!!
Nice Post Stoopmama. I think the title combined, with the first pictures made me hungry.
I miss this place… so many good memories
Great post and awesome photos! We were in Brooklyn last weekend for the Renegade Craft Fair, and were wishing we had time to check out Coney Island, especially after a friend who was helping us out told us about her super-fun visit there the week before. It is definitely on my To Do List now!
The Renegade Craft Fair is only one of my FAVORITE PLACES ON EARTH!!! Seriously. SWOON!!! I wait for it every year with bated breath, and always score the GREATEST stuff. Yay!
Looks like so much fun! I haven’t been to Coney in years, you have pushed me to go… soon!
love to see a bit of good fashioned American culture, would luv to visit one day

aww I hope you had great fun!

loved it as a kid but was disappointed to find it out run down and dirty last time I visited in the early nineties. Glad to hear and see that its turned around, cleaned up and put smiles on people’s face once again.
Great pictures!
Been to Coney Island only once… and I thought I might die riding the Cyclone. But after surviving, I still feel a sense of pride for having lived to tell the tale. Love your photos BTW.
Coney Island is a great amusement park fun rides stuff to eat a good place to visit on a nice day.
Love Coney Island… so wish I could have made it to the Mermaid Parade yesterday!

Little girl looks like a peach!
I hope you had a hotdog and were there diving horses off the pier?
Amusement parks are so great! Especially the older ones. We had one here in town that’s been closed down for some time now. There’s a group that is trying to get it reopened. I hope they succeed because it gave me many great childhood memories!
Your images are fantastic and made me think of the fun times I spent at our own local park. I sure miss it. But thanks for sharing your own fun times and your wonderful photography!
Amazing photos!

Nice photos! Being from the UK, Coney Island is one of those places that always seems like it should be a backdrop to a movie rather than a real place (like Mount Rushmore). It’s great to see pictures that add some reality to that… Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed.
That looks cool and great blog post
I recently finished reading “Vaclav and Lena” by Haley Tanner which is a wonderful book about two Russian immigrant children who live in Brooklyn and the little boy, Vaclav, wants to be a magician and have a show on Coney Island. I haven’t actually been to Coney Island but these photos reminded me of the book — it’s exactly how I pictured it when I was reading.
Great blog by the way. And congrats on being on the Freshly Pressed page!
This looks like a whole lot of fun! I’ve never actually been to Coney Island before, nor have I bothered, but maybe I should consider visiting soon…
Thanks for sharing!
Those are some really nice photos! I love Coney island, I use to go every Saturday when I was smaller.
I’ve never been to Coney Island, I’ve always wanted to go!
